Be Happy – 10 Things You Need to Stop Doing to Find Happiness

Happiness – it’s what we all strive to find and keep. Nobody is happy all the time but some people are more fulfilled than others. Rather than concentrating on the things you can do to become happier, why not concentrate on things that need to be removed from your life first.

Consider how to find happiness and what would happen when you stop doing the following things:

1. Attributing blame

People make mistakes. Employees don’t meet expectations. Your retailer doesn’t deliver the goods on time. So what do you do? Blame them for your problems.

Stop for a second and consider if you’re to blame. Maybe you didn’t provide enough training, maybe you asked too much, too soon.

Take responsibility when things go wrong instead of blaming others. It’s an empowering thing to accept that next time you’ll be better, smarter or more organised. And when you do, you’ll be happier.

2. Showing off

Stop trying to impress people with your car, your clothes, your possessions, or even your title. People won’t like you for these ‘things’; they’ll like you because of you.

If they do like you because of your material possession, then they’re the superficial ones, and a relationship that is not based on substance is not a real relationship.

Genuine relationships make you happier, but these can only be formed when you stop trying to impress and start being yourself.

3. Clinging on

When you’re afraid or insecure, you hold on tightly to what you know, even if it isn’t particularly good for you.

Holding onto what you think you need won’t make you happier. You need to let go so that you can reach for the things that will make you happier.

Even if you don’t succeed, trying will make you feel better about yourself.

4. Interjecting

Interrupting is rude. When you interrupt someone, what you’re saying is ‘I’m listening to you so I can decide what I want to say next’.

If you want people to like you, listen to what they’re saying. Ask relevant questions and be interested and engaged. People will love you for it – and you’ll love yourself.

5. Whining

If something is wrong – don’t waste time complaining about it. Whining about problems doesn’t help your situation, it does the opposite – it makes you feel worse.

You can’t whinge about something forever; eventually you’ll have to fix it, so fix it now.

Consider how you can make things better. Talk to yourself, or your friends and family when they whinge. Help others to make their lives better too.

6. Being a control freak

It doesn’t matter if you’re Queen Elizabeth, President Obama, or on the night shift at the local Tesco – you control you. If you find yourself trying to control other people, you are basically saying that your idea, goal, or opinions are better than that person.

Find and connect with people who have the same ideologies as you. They’ll work harder, have more fun and you’ll create better relationships.

7. Judging others

Everyone is different; not better, not worse, just different.

Learn to appreciate the differences in people or your staff rather than criticizing them for their shortcomings.

8. Preaching

The more you accomplish in life – the more likely you are to think you know everything and to tell people everything you think you know.

When you preach, people will hear you but won’t listen. Make yourself happier by passing on your knowledge in a constructive way.

9. Overthinking things

The past is in the past for a reason. Learn from your mistakes and from the mistakes of others, then let it go.

If something bad happens to you, see it as a chance to grow and learn something you didn’t already know. If someone else makes a mistake see it as a chance to be kind, forgiving and understanding.

The past doesn’t define you. Think about what went wrong but only with a positive mind-set – and next time you’ll get it right.

10. Being scared

We’re all afraid – of what might happen, what might not happen, what we won’t be able to do, how other people perceive us.

Don’t let your fears hold you back. Whatever you’re planning or imagining – get started on it today.
