Will Twitter launch a new music service today?

Twitter is rumoured to be launching a new music service after buying music discovery site We Are Hunted.

We Are Hunted have confirmed the deal, and are shutting down. They said: ‘there’s no question that Twitter and music go well together’. A newly launched site, music.twitter.com features the famous Twitter bird and a hashtag #music. The site is not live at the moment.

US celebrity host, Ryan Seacrest, tweeted on Thursday: “playing with @twitter’s new music app (yes it’s real!)… there’s a serious dance party happening at idol right now”. It is thought the music app will be launched today (Friday).

Twitter acquired We Are Hunted in 2012, suggesting that the music app has been in the works for some time.

This move from Twitter comes as music streaming has taken off amid a digital downloading boom. Sites like Spotify use music streaming extremely effectively. Music is streamed from songs hosted on servers, instead of downloaded directly to your device.
